Why Do We Need Vitamin D?Vitamin D influences about 2000 genes, affecting nearly all areas of our lives. Primarily, we get vitamin D through the sun’s UVB rays, which convert cholesterol in the skin into a precursor of vitamin D called cholecalciferol. This is then further converted in the liver and kidneys into the active form called calcitriol. For the skin to produce vitamin D, the sun must be at least 45 degrees above the horizon, which only occurs during the summer months. This means that during the winter months, the sun is too low for those of us in northern latitudes to produce any vitamin D at all.During the summer months, you must expose bare skin to the sun’s rays to produce vitamin D. If you wear clothing that covers the skin, no vitamin D is produced. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, and the amount you build up during the summer months is stored and used during the winter.
